Then Yahweh God made garments of skins for the man and his wife and clothed them. And Yahweh God said: “Now the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat and live forever.” So, Yahweh God banished Adam from the Garden of Eden to work the land from which he was created. He drove out the man, and at the east of the Garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned in every direction to guard the way to the Tree of Life. (Genesis 3, 21 -24)

Adam and Eve are banished from the Garden of Eden after disobeying the divine law. This scene captures the despair and sadness of Adam and Eve, dressed in garments of animal skins to present themselves before God without shame. The angel in this representation guards the entrance to the lost paradise and enforces divine judgment. The serpent is also in the scene, crawling as a symbol of its curse. From this moment on, the foundational myth of the Jewish people becomes a story about the tension between human freedom and divine law to preserve the original friendship with God. In Christianity, Paul and later Augustine spoke of the “original sin”, committed by Adam and Eve and inherited by all humanity. God will seek to restore this relationship through different covenants, culminating in the person of Jesus.
