Erik Van Lieshout Deurne, Netherlands, b. 1968

Biography

Born in Deurne in 1968, he lives and works in Rotterdam.

He studied at the Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch and at De Ateliers.

 

At the beginning of his career, Van Lieshout established himself as an expressionist draftsman and painter, but over the years his work has developed into a multifaceted practice that includes architectural interventions, installations, and videos addressing a multitude of contemporary socio-political issues such as multiculturalism, the political right, the position of minorities and foreigners, as well as modern consumer society.

 

Some of his solo exhibitions have been at Kunstverein Hannover; South London, London; Anton Kern, New York; Museum of Modern Art, Frankfurt; Bawag Contemporary Vienna, Austria; Stella Lohaus, Antwerp; Krinzinger, Vienna; and Centre d'édition contemporaine, Geneva, among others.

 

His works have also been part of multiple group exhibitions such as those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Thessaloniki Biennial; NCCA, Moscow; Moscow Biennial; Venice Biennial; Art Unlimited, Basel; The Museum Boijmans van Beunigen, Rotterdam, among others.
