After the death of Herod, the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream in Egypt and said: “Get up, take the child and his mother, and return to the land of Israel, for those who sought to kill the child are dead.” Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and returned to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Following a warning he received in a dream, he went to the region of Galilee and settled in a town called Nazareth. Thus was fulfilled what the prophets had said: “He will be called a Nazarene.” (Matthew 2,19-23)

A simple and intimate representation of a family at rest, which contrasts with the wonders and events that the Apocryphal Gospels attribute to this period of the Holy Family’s exile. This scene could be interpreted as the message Joseph receives to return to his homeland after Herod’s death. The initial intention was to settle in Judea, but upon being warned that Archelaus, Herod’s son, was reigning there, they decide to settle in the north, in Nazareth of Galilee, so that Jesus would be called a “Nazarene,” meaning consecrated.
