The boy grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. Every year, the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus was twelve years old, he also went up with them to the feast, as was the custom. After the days of the festival were over, they began the journey back, but the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, without his parents knowing it. Thinking he was in the caravan, they travelled for a whole day. Then they began to look for him among their relatives and acquaintances. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days, they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. His parents were overwhelmed when they saw him, and his mother said to him: “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been terribly worried, searching for you.” He answered them: “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he meant by this. (Luke 2,40–50)
The scene shows the figure of young Jesus rising from his seat with arms up while debating with several elders who have long beards, which gives them an air of wisdom and respectability. Some of them observe the child attentively, others are reflecting on what they’ve heard, and a few are reading the texts open before them.
The scene depicted is narrated in the Gospel of Luke. According to the account, when Jesus was twelve years old, his parents took him to the temple in Jerusalem for the annual pilgrimage. On their way back, Jesus was missing, and after three days of searching, they found him in the temple, seated among the teachers of Mosaic law, discussing matters of religion.
