Herod became very angry when he realized that the Wise Men had deceived him, and, taking note of the date they had given him, he ordered the killing of all male children two years old or under in Bethlehem and its surroundings. Thus, was fulfilled what the prophet Jeremiah had announced: “A voice was heard in Ramah, loud crying, and bitter lamentation: it is Rachel weeping for her children; they are no more, and she refuses to be comforted.” (Matthew 2:16-18)
This scene represents the passage of the massacre of the innocents, which only appears in the Gospel of Matthew, when King Herod ordered the killing of all male children two years old or under, after feeling betrayed by the Wise Men who had informed him of the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem. The figures in this scene show Nieva’s extraordinary ability to convey emotion, restrained movement, and a nearly cinematic sense of drama, they depict with precision the brutality of the soldiers and the madness of King Herod, but also the despair and helplessness of mothers witnessing the murder of their children, alongside the outburst of some who defend themselves with whatever they have at hand.
