David Shrigley: DON’T (No lo hagas) (2019): Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Ciudad de México - Del 22 de Junio al 29 de Septiembre 2019

 Fundación Amparo y Manuel (AMMA) presented the first exhibition in Mexico City by the British artist David Shrigley, who since the late 1990s has been characterized by a sense of humor in his work, as well as by the use of irony and the absurd.

The 94 works in the exhibition established a dialogue between early pieces and their recent practice, which generate direct and powerful messages through provocative phrases and immediate drawings, perhaps more linked to the line of caricature than to cultured art, always through irreverent gestures and blunt simplicity.

The phrases that Shrigley incorporates in the pieces are a key element, even going so far as to decant the text exclusively as an image. Made, most of the times, with handwritten letters, including those that allude to the ease with an ironic feeling, as in the case of the two pieces produced expressly for this exhibition: the neon Esposition and the installation I hate balloons, which transform the artist's calligraphy, through industrial processes, in a kind of rebellious typography.
