In the region there were shepherds living out in the fields, who took turns watching over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were very afraid. But the angel said to them: “Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today, in the city of David, a Saviour has been born for you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This is how you will recognize him: you will find a newborn wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly, a multitude of heavenly beings appeared with the angel, praising God with these words: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2, 8-14)
This scene represents what is narrated in the Gospel of Luke, an author who consistently surprises by highlighting God’s preference for the poor, for women, and for the outcasts of society.
The evangelist narrates how an angel visits a group of shepherds, who were taking care of their flocks in some fields near Bethlehem, to announce the birth of the Messiah and how he gives them the sign that they will find him wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Then the sky is filled with angels praising God with the words: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Nieva managed to capture a great level of emotion in the shepherds, who seem to have different ages, they appear to be abruptly interrupted in their sleep, their work, and their play at the sight of the angel, perched upon a cloud, who invites them to set out for the manger, where they will find the newborn Jesus.
