Raffi Kalenderian USA, b. 1981

Biography

Raffi Kalenderian was born in 1981 in Los Angeles, where he still lives.

He studied painting at the University of California, Los Angeles. He later undertook an artist residency at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California.

Kalenderian works with oil painting, watercolor, graphite, and colored pencils, materials he sometimes combines with collages made from photocopied material. In his portraits, the figures appear in domestic interiors, where patterns found in clothing and furniture construct intricate abstractions. The artist portrays a youth culture that seems perpetually poised in anticipation of something else, and through his painting he has developed a reflection on leisure.

Kalenderian has held solo exhibitions at Buchmann Gallery, Berlin; Peter Kilchmann, Zurich; Brand New Gallery, Milan; and at Susanne Vielmetter and the Black Dragon Society, both in Los Angeles. He has participated in group exhibitions at Setareh Gallery, Düsseldorf; Saatchi Gallery, London; and Taymour Grahne, New York.
