Yui Kugimiya Tokyo, Japan, b. 1981
Born in Tokyo in 1981, Kugimiya lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine; Yale University School of Art; Massachusetts College of Art, Boston; and Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, Massachusetts.
Her work is inspired by everyday activities, both social and solitary. This dual tendency is also expressed in her use of color, which sometimes leans toward soft pastels and other times is intense and striking.
Her work has been exhibited at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; Enrique Guerrero Gallery, Mexico City; Taka Ishii, Kyoto; Horton, New York; and Ingalls and Associates, Miami. She has also participated in group exhibitions at David Castillo Gallery, Miami; Gasser & Grunert, New York; Regina Rex, Brooklyn; Suzanne Tarasieve, Paris; and Galapagos Art Space, New York, among others.
Her work is represented in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse.
