Tracey Emin London, b. 1963

Biography

Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963, where she lives and works.

She studied at Maidstone College of Art and at the Royal College of Art, both in London.

For her work, Emin draws inspiration from events in her own life. In terms of techniques, she has worked with painting, drawing, video, photography, and installation, as well as embroidery and sculpture. Emin reveals her hopes, humiliations, failures, and successes in work that is sometimes cathartic, often tragic and humorous, and always sincere. Her interest in the work of Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele led her to explore ideas of representation and complex personal states.

Emin has exhibited extensively around the world, in both solo and group exhibitions, in the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Some of the most notable galleries and institutions include Lehmann Maupin, New York; MoCA, Miami; MALBA, Buenos Aires; White Cube, London; Lorcan O’Neill, Rome; the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Málaga; Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills, CA; and Tate Britain, London, among others.

Emin represented Great Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, becoming the second woman to do so. She has received honors such as Royal Academician, an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal College of Art, a Doctor of Letters from the University of Kent, and a Doctor of Philosophy from London Metropolitan University.
