Alexey Kallima Russia, b. 1969

Biography

Kallima was born in Grozny, Chechnya, in 1969. He lives and works in Moscow.

He graduated from the Krasnodar College of Fine Arts. In Moscow, he founded the France gallery. In 2006, he won the prize for Best Visual Work in the Innovation competition, promoted by the NCCA (National Centre for Contemporary Arts) in Moscow.

 

One of his most frequent themes has been the Chechen War, which he approaches through an expressionist figurative language in paintings and collages. Later, he focused his interest on the development of daily life, urban spaces, and dystopian landscapes. He uses all types of materials, such as charcoal, watercolors, phosphorescent paint, and even candy wrappers. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide.

 

His solo exhibitions include those held at the Regina Gallery, Moscow and London; the 4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art; the Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris; the Val-de-Marne Museum of Contemporary Art, Paris; Lehmann Maupin, New York; the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Bourges; the Galerie Volker Diehl, Berlin; and Vladey, Moscow.

 

He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues such as the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; the Ukrainian Biennale of Modern Art; Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona; the Louvre Museum, Paris; the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the Venice Biennale, and others. His work is represented in collections in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Russia, such as that of Anton Kozlov.
