André Butzer Germany, b. 1973

Biography

Born in Stuttgart in 1973, Butzer lives in Berlin.

Butzer’s painting combines strong expressionist traits with elements of pop culture, resulting in immediately recognizable works filled with large‑eyed, cartoon‑like characters. He himself describes his practice as “science‑fiction expressionism.”

Since 1996, his paintings have been the subject of numerous exhibitions. Notable solo exhibitions include those held at the IKOB Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen; Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover; Kunsthalle Nürnberg; Kunstverein Reutlingen; the Museum of Light in Hokuto; Växjö Konsthall in Växjö; YUZ Museum in Shanghai; and the Thyssen‑Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

His works are part of major collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; Carré d’Art, Nîmes; the Contemporary Art Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn; Deichtorhallen Hamburg; the Hall Art Foundation, Reading; the Kupferstichkabinett of the Berlin State Museums; the Marciano Art Collection, Los Angeles; the Nationalgalerie / Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; and LACMA.
