Marley Freeman Boston, Massachusetts , b. 1981
Marley Freeman, born in Lynn in 1981, lives and works in New York.
She is known for her intimate abstractions in oil and acrylic on linen and canvas. Often approached as long-term projects, her paintings display a multitude of colors layered in varying degrees of opacity and sheen. They reveal the artist’s deep sensitivity to a broad range of form and tonality. In addition, Freeman’s work establishes a dialogue with the history of textiles, imbuing the complexity of woven structures with psychological depth. She is an artist openly interested in the process of painting itself.
She has exhibited at galleries such as Parker, Los Angeles; Karma, New York; Travesía Cuatro, Guadalajara; and Janice Guy at MBnb, New York. Her work is held in collections and institutions including the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the RISD Museum, Providence, Rhode Island; the San Antonio Museum of Art, Texas; the University of Colorado Art Museum, Boulder; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
