Biography

Francis Ruyter, born in Washington DC in 1968, lives and works in Vienna.

Ruyter studied at the MCPS Art Center in Maryland, the School of Visual Arts in New York, and followed the Hunter College Graduate Fine Arts Program in New York. He has taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at Columbia University, the Maryland Institute, the 70 College of Art, and New York University.

 

Ruyter's artistic process merges new media and technologies with traditional drawing, painting, and engraving techniques. His work begins with a photograph, which he transfers to a surface and reduces to colorful zones and delineated areas.

 

Among Ruyter's solo exhibitions are Eleven Rivington, New York; Alan Cristea, London; Leeahn, Seoul and Daegu; Georg Kargl, Vienna; Taka Ishii, Tokyo; Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris; Mimmo Scognamiglio Arte Contemporanea, Naples; and Museum der Moderne, Salzburg. Ruyter has also participated in special projects such as the Hoarding Project, Tate Modern, London; and Projects 77, Museum of Modern Art, New York.

 

Ruyter's works belong to collections such as the Denver Art Museum; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; La Colección Jumex, Mexico City; Collection le Consortium, Dijon; and Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, among others.
