Biography

Born in Tulln, Austria, in 1954, Franz Graf lives and works in Vienna.

He studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Between 1997 and 2006, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

 

Graf works across various media, including drawing, sculpture, and installation. In the 1980s, he was involved in the Neo‑Geo movement. His work later evolved toward an expressive geometry through which he explores the communicative capacities of all the elements involved in drawing, such as the line.

 

Among his notable solo exhibitions are those held at Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna; Kunsthalle Krems; Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Vienna; Galerie im Traklhaus, Salzburg; The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik; De Appel Foundation, Amsterdam; and Kunsthalle Wien.

 

Graf has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues such as the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles; RMIT Gallery, Melbourne; Leopold Museum, Vienna; Prague City Gallery; Cora Hölzl, Düsseldorf; Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton; the Ludwig Museum, Budapest; the Denver Art Museum; the National Museum of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires; the Palais des Beaux‑Arts, Brussels; and the Toyama Museum of Modern Art, among others.
