Antony Gormley Londres, Reino Unido, b. 1950

Biography

Born in 1950 in London, Anthony Gormley lives and works in his hometown.

After earning a degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Art History at Trinity College, Cambridge, he moved to India, where he became interested in Buddhism and practiced vipassana meditation. Three years later, he returned to England to study at the Central School of Art, Goldsmiths, and the Slade School of Fine Art.

Over the past twenty‑five years, using his own body as subject, tool, and material, Gormley has revitalized the treatment of the human figure in sculpture through his investigation of the body as a site of memory and transformation.

Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, with exhibitions at Forte di Belvedere, Florence; Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern; Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília; Deichtorhallen, Hamburg; the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; Kunsthaus, Bregenz; Hayward Gallery, London; Malmö Konsthall; and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk.

He has also participated in major group exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale in 1982 and 1986, and Documenta 8 in 1987.
