Jonathan Lyndon Chase b. b. 1989
Jonathan Lyndon Chase was born in 1989 in Philadelphia (United States), where he currently lives and works.
He graduated from the University of the Arts in his hometown and earned a master’s degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Among the themes he addresses in his work are Black and non-binary identities and subjectivities, which also allow him to explore the boundaries between the public and the private. He approaches these themes through techniques such as painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and poetry.
His visual work is forceful and striking, with an expressionist feel and the bold, decisive mark associated with acrylics or markers; drawing is central to his practice, and it shows influences from collage and assemblage. He often portrays people in the midst of an everyday situation that reveals something of their emotional world and subjectivity.
His work has been shown in group exhibitions such as those held at Thierry Goldberg, ROMEO, or Deitch Projects in New York; the Taubman Museum in Roanoke; the Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles; Fleisher/Ollman in Philadelphia; Art Brussels; or Denmark in Copenhagen. He has held solo exhibitions at galleries such as Gió Marconi in Milan, Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, Thierry Goldberg and Company in New York, and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
His work can be found in public and private collections such as the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum, the Bronx Museum, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Rubell Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Wedge Collection, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among others.
