The perspective of a path through the trees recedes toward the left side of the painting. There are a few puddles on the ground, and the trees are still bare, but the approach of spring is hinted at by the grass dotted with flowers and by a certain quality of the blue hue that streams down from the sky, frames the arch formed by the trees, and spreads out in the reflection on the water.
Hockney began drawing on touchscreens in 2009, when he received his first iPhone. For many years, the artist began each day by drawing flowers—which his boyfriend would leave on his nightstand—and emailing digitized bouquets to his closest friends. Hockney’s rapid adoption of the touchscreen represents a continuation of the pop artist’s fascination with innovative technology, which had led him to experiment with fax machines, Polaroid film, and Photoshop years earlier. Today, Hockney uses his iPad to document the changing seasons near his home in East Yorkshire.
