At a bar counter, a young man with an exhausted expression clutches his arm as if applying a tourniquet. Blood flows from a wound; a bat is lapping it up. There are also two glasses filled with what might pass for red wine, were it not for the well-stocked blood bank visible in the background. To top it all off, the scene is bathed in red light.
Hernan Bas’s paintings draw inspiration from late 19th-century art and literature and are heavily influenced by the Nabis (the French art group). Aesthetically grounded in the iconography of the androgynous male dandy, the figures in his works are often portrayed as suspended in time—poised between adolescence and adulthood—whether confined to the intimacy of a genre scene or lost amidst the dizzying expanse of a dense, lush, Romantic landscape, all within a world of implicit eroticism and ambiguous sensuality.
