On a four-poster bed draped with hangings, three people are engaged in a sexual encounter. The woman lies face down, flanked by two men. Her long black hair falls over her shoulders; she wears a crown like a saint. Her expression of alarm is mirrored by the small dog witnessing the scene, so astonished that it has dropped the bone in its mouth. We don't see the men's faces, which, combined with the tridents coiled around the columns like serpents, creates a strong sense of unease.
Oh de Laval's painting reveals her fascination with human behavior, with the decisions we make, why we make them, and how we feel about the outcome. Primarily focused on hedonism, her work demands pleasure in all things, including, of course, art. She employs an erotic expressionism in search of raw, untamed emotion.
