Inspired by Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), a fictional account of an ideal society used to critique social inequality and political power, Map of Nowhere questions the idea that life leads towards a clear moral or spiritual ending. Using the format of a medieval world map, Perry places doubt at the centre and replaces religious certainty with a busy mix of contemporary beliefs, personal references and social commentary. The work offers a satirical view of class and power in modern Britain as Perry highlights how consumer culture, the free market and ideas of self-improvement now shape social values.
