Beneath the paint—dissolved and spread across the canvas—one can discern a human figure and, beside it, at least one animal with a forked tongue. The red and pink tones convey alarm rather than warmth. There are a couple of flags and brushstrokes that seem to reveal the painter's attitude—and even his physical posture and movements—as he approached the work.

Meese is a German conceptual artist who works with diverse techniques, ranging from performance and installation to painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, and writing. He addresses themes such as power, desire, and identity, and has developed a personal mythology that combines historical, legendary, and science-fiction references.
