Composed of layered papers, the portrait depicts two men posing beside a surfboard at the water's edge. The sea, the sand, and a distant structure—perhaps a jetty—form a blurred background, while the human figures appear somewhat more schematic.
In his work, Van Lieshout addresses contemporary sociopolitical themes—such as multiculturalism, the status of minorities and migrants, and modern consumer society—often expressing them through collages and bold lines that convey a sense of urgency and violence. He approaches these issues from a personal perspective, positioning himself within the situation as an active participant who triggers humorous or uncomfortable moments. -
