World War II left a profound mark on the life of Georg Baselitz, for whom the concept of destruction has been a cornerstone of both his life and his artistic practice. He is considered a pioneer of German Neo-Expressionism. In 1969, he began painting his figures upside down in an attempt to move beyond the representational nature of his earlier work.
Working across painting, drawing, printmaking, and monumental wood sculpture, Baselitz frequently addresses themes related to post-war German national identity, particularly the role of German artists.
