A woman lies sprawled on a bed of flowers. The blue of her skin contrasts with the warm tones of the flowers, but what is truly striking is that she is cut off at the waist; the lower half of her body is missing. Her face is both schematic and expressionistic in the contortion of her swollen lips and her striking dark circles under her eyes.
Goring’s drawings and paintings, based on autobiographical experiences, also draw on Symbolist traditions. In her somber and fantastical universe, recurring motifs include dark landscapes, anthropomorphic flowers, tears, and distorted women (often the dual figure of Penny herself and Amelia, the artist’s former lover who died young from an overdose), always standing out against flat backgrounds transformed into fields of color.
