An unusual painting in Penny Goring’s body of work, given its cheerful nature. In the center, two women are gazing at each other joyfully. One of them lovingly rests her hand on the other’s shoulder; the other’s chest is covered by a heart made of dots, and she is slipping her hand between her legs. In their free hands, each woman holds a yellow flower. Their hair flows like garlands. Red flowers grow from the ground.
Goring’s drawings and paintings, based on autobiographical experiences, also draw on Symbolist traditions. In her somber and fantastical universe, recurring motifs include dark landscapes, anthropomorphic flowers, tears, and distorted women (often the dual figure of Penny herself and Amelia, the artist’s former lover who died young from an overdose), always standing out against flat backgrounds transformed into fields of color.
