A frontal, symmetrical portrait of two women shedding dark tears. As in other works by the artist, the tears that have already fallen cover part of their bodies. Their pubic areas are covered by hearts. The ornamental motifs in the background subtly suggest an animal world connected to mythology; they are reminiscent of deer antlers, the animal that accompanied Artemis, goddess of the hunt and the woods and protector of maidens.
Goring’s drawings and paintings, based on autobiographical experiences, also draw on Symbolist traditions. In her somber and fantastical universe, recurring motifs include dark landscapes, anthropomorphic flowers, tears, and distorted women (often the dual figure of Penny herself and Amelia, the artist’s former lover who died young from an overdose), always standing out against flat backgrounds transformed into fields of color.
