A woman kneeling holds an amputated leg. She weeps tears of blood, which have formed a pool. One of the red tears hides one of her nipples; a pale heart covers her pubis. Pale butterflies flutter around her against a black background, interrupted only in one corner, where we see the heads of three women (the witches of Macbeth, the Fates, the Gorgons?) impaled on stakes.
Goring’s drawings and paintings, based on autobiographical experiences, also draw on Symbolist traditions. In her somber and fantastical universe, recurring motifs include dark landscapes, anthropomorphic flowers, tears, and distorted women (often the dual figure of Penny herself and Amelia, the artist’s former lover who died young from an overdose), always standing out against flat backgrounds transformed into fields of color.1of 4
