David Shrigley: DON’T (No lo hagas) (2019)

Amparo and Manuel Foundation (AMMA) presented the first exhibition in Mexico City by British artist David Shrigley, whose work since the late 1990s has been characterized by a sense of humor, as well as the use of irony and the absurd.

The 94 works in the exhibition established a dialogue between early pieces and his more recent practice. They convey direct, powerful messages through provocative phrases and spontaneous drawings—closer in style to caricature than to high art—always employing irreverent gestures and striking simplicity.

The phrases Shrigley incorporates into his pieces are a key element, at times distilling the text until it functions purely as an image. Usually rendered in handwriting, these phrases evoke a sense of casualness tinged with irony—as seen in the two works created specifically for this exhibition: the neon piece Esposición (Exhibition) and the installation Odio los globos (I Hate Balloons). Through industrial processes, these works transformed the artist's handwriting into a kind of rebellious typeface.
