Brad Kahlhamer USA, b. 1956

Biography

Lives and works in New York.

Kahlhamer has a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He has been awarded by the Rauschenberg Foundation, The Monet Foundation,The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and has received the Joan Mitchell Award, among others.

 He grew-up without knowledge of his Amerindian heritage. His work explores his own identity and the influence of American Tribes on culture. His Expressionist and Surreal style is inspired by country music, punk culture, graffiti aesthetics, and comic book graphics. Kahlhamer’s work compounds a world where experiences exist along with a mythological world. 

He has had solo exhibitions at Joslyn Art Museum, Nebraska; Denver Museum of Contemporary Art; Aspen Art Museum; Jack Shainman Gallery, New York; Andréhn-Schiptjenko Gallery, Stockholm; Knokke-Zoute, Belgium; and Deitch Projects, New York; he has also been part of numerous group shows.

His work belongs to collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Milwaukee Art Museum; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
