Brad Kahlhamer USA, b. 1956

Biography

He was born in Tucson in 1956 and lives and works in New York.

Kahlhamer holds a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He has received multiple awards, including from the Rauschenberg Foundation, the Monet Foundation, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and the Joan Mitchell Award, among others.

He grew up with no knowledge of his American Indian heritage. His work explores his own identity and the influence of American tribes on culture. His expressionist and surrealist style is also inspired by country music, punk culture, and the aesthetics of graffiti and comics. His work combines his life experiences in a world he observes through a mythological prism.

He has had solo exhibitions at the Joslyn Art Museum, Nebraska; the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art; the Aspen Art Museum; Jack Shainman Gallery, New York; Andréhn-Schiptjenko Gallery, Stockholm; and Deitch Projects, New York; and has also participated in many group exhibitions.

His work is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
