Sarah Lucas Londres, Reino Unido, b. 1962
Sarah Lucas lives and works in London, where she was born in 1962.
She is one of the most important figures of the YBAs (Young British Artists), the generation of British artists that emerged in the 1990s. She studied in London at Working Men’s College (1982–83), the London College of Printing (1983–84), and Goldsmiths’ College (1984–87).
Her work is characterized by irreverent humor and encompasses a variety of media, including sculpture, photography, and installation. She employs ordinary objects in unexpected ways as substitutes for the human body, with the aim of constantly challenging conventional understandings of sex, class, and gender.
Lucas has exhibited in numerous museums and institutions, including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Legion of Honor; CFA–Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin; Sir John Soane’s Museum in London; the British Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale; Aspen Art Museum; Whitechapel Gallery in London; Kunsthalle Krems; the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens; Tate Britain; and Tate Modern in London.
