A group portrait with the air of a snapshot, in which the main subject seems to be so by the chance of being in the right position at the right moment. The figures have a relaxed attitude, engaged in casual conversation. The image is taken from the film The Definite Maybe (Rob Lobl and Sam Sokolow, 1999). The conversion to a non-realist treatment of color, along with the chosen tones, contributes to the overall lightness.

Ruyter’s artistic process merges new media and technologies with traditional techniques of drawing, painting, and printmaking. He works from photographs, which he reduces to colored areas and outlined zones. Often, the source works are iconic images, well-known photographs, or film stills.
