In the Fongbe language, Gbèto means “the being who sustains life” or “the master of the world.” Under this title, which simply acknowledges personal dignity, Didier Viodé presents a self-portrait, frontal and three-quarter view, in a large-scale work where only his clothing suggests a casual nature.
In his work, Viodé reflects on the banality of contemporary urban life, reducing the painting to its essence: gestures, textured silhouettes and shadows, postures, and empty, unoccupied spaces reflect an increasingly stagnant world. -
