The unsettling quality of the woman portrayed lies not only in the defiant nature of her gaze but also in the ornamental motifs of the background, which recall both the snakes on Medusa’s head and the depiction of electrical tension in comic book art.
Maluka works with large-format paintings, blending Western pop culture, the Dutch portrait tradition, and the vanguard of African street culture.
