Composed of fabrics of different sizes sewn together, and combining crochet and embroidery, the piece depicts a central male figure accompanied by portraits of other people, as well as seals or medallions displaying a variety of roses, in a distillation of the distinctive elements of the film American Beauty (Sam Mendes, 1999), from which the title is also derived.

Klaas is known for his embroidered tapestries, inspired both by classic and cult cinema and by his personal experiences. Whether executed in cross-stitch, crochet, or other textile techniques, his works are firmly rooted in everyday life and closely connected to his surroundings and his community.
