A woman stretches. The vagueness of her features, the black-and-white palette, and the combination of materials make the piece appear unfinished—a work in progress or a sketch for another, definitive piece. There is also a curious perceptual effect whereby the piece brings to mind Mickey Mouse due to an indeterminate element, which may be part of the woman’s clothing but resembles one of the animated character’s ears.
Graf creates images that straddle the line between the figurative and the abstract, between associations with elements of the past, memory, and the present, to tap into the workings of the subconscious. His work alludes to pleasure, death, and separation from those we feel close to.
