A naked woman, wearing only high boots, lies in apparent agony in the arms of a man dressed as a motorcyclist, all in black. Both are smoking. She has bloodstains on her skin. They are accompanied by a cat and a raven. The setting is ambiguous, as the cobblestones visible on the ground seem to transform into trees—dry and gray—in the background.
Through a sarcastic and absurd narrative that borders on the grotesque, Lewis addresses the everyday human dramas that unfold in today’s urban environments. His painting is influenced by the compositional drama of medieval and Renaissance painting, where the picture plane is dominated by the intertwining of bodies and marked by emblematic symbols of sin, virtue, and status.
