Three young people, presumably friends, are shown on the beach on a bright day. The sharp shadows and the movement of one of the women’s hair suggest clear, windy weather. They are focused on something off-camera, and from the clothes they are wearing, we can tell that their visit to the beach was spontaneous.
Blanck finds inspiration for his deeply intimate portraits in his everyday life. The color and line work vibrantly capture diverse personalities and moods, expressing a deep familiarity with the subjects of his paintings. He uses the collage technique, applying layers of painted paper over watercolor, which in turn is painted directly onto stretched paper. His emphasis on patterns, the lack of specificity, and the detached formal compositions suggest a dialogue with the formalist interests associated with Pop Art.
