Five full-length figures appear to be engaged in conversation—an animated one, judging by their smiles. Their features are highly schematic, and only two of the faces look human, though all the bodies are anthropomorphic. They truly resemble cartoon characters—somewhat stylized and rendered with minimal strokes against a solid, saturated background.
Butzer himself describes his style as “science-fiction expressionism.” He fuses American pop culture with Expressionist painting, depicting both cartoon-like characters and playful abstract forms against colorful, whimsical backgrounds. Yet, an undercurrent of unsettling darkness always pulses beneath the artist’s bright, seemingly cheerful paintings.
